The Perils of Texting and Driving

As personal injury lawyers, we have clients come in our office every day that have been seriously injured in an accident. Oftentimes, a client will remark that the other party was seen on his or her cell phone. As text messaging is becoming more and more popular, there are more accidents that result from distracted drivers sending text messages from their cell phones while driving. The numbers are staggering.

Last year an estimated six thousand people died from accidents as a result of driving while texting. That number does not include drivers who lived who suffered serious brain injuries or paralysis. Driving while texting not only presents a danger to all drivers and passengers on the road, but there are major insurance costs being passed down to every consumer. Last year, cell phone related accidents resulted in over $40 billion in damages from an estimated 1.6 million crashes each year.

Sending text messages while driving is clearly dangerous and even deadly. We are all aware of the perils of drinking and driving, yet sending text messages while behind the wheel is routine. They should be viewed as equally dangerous. In fact, one study suggests that sending a text message while driving slows reaction times more than several alcoholic beverages.

No text message is important enough to risk your life and the lives of others on the road. Please refrain from sending text messages while driving.
